Day 3 — Return to the Word

Today's Focus: Let God's Word examine and correct your thinking.

Read: John 5:39; 2 Timothy 3:16–17

“All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness.” — 2 Timothy 3:16

The Lesson

One of the easiest things to do when life becomes difficult is to start making decisions based entirely on how we feel, what we see, or what makes the most

sense to us in the moment. We may stop praying consistently. We may neglect reading our Bibles. We may seek advice from everybody except people who will encourage us to live according to God's Word.  Eventually, our thinking can become shaped more by our circumstances and the voices around us than by our faith.  That is why returning to Scripture matters.  In John 5:39, Jesus directs His listeners to the Scriptures, which testify of Him. In 2 Timothy, we learn that Scripture teaches, corrects, and trains us in righteousness. God's Word is not merely something we read to feel better. It is a standard that helps us recognize when our attitudes, choices, and priorities need to change.  Sometimes the Word comforts us. Sometimes it challenges us. Sometimes it exposes a habit we have justified for years.  For example, the world may tell us that revenge is strength, but Scripture teaches us to pursue forgiveness and leave room for God's judgment. Our pride may tell us never to admit we are wrong, but Scripture calls us to humility. Our desires may tell us to put ourselves first at every opportunity, but Scripture teaches us to love God and our neighbors.  Reading the Bible does not mean we will never make mistakes. It means we have a source of truth to which we can return when we do.  You cannot consistently apply a Word you never take time to learn.  Reflect and be honest. How consistent have you been in reading and applying Scripture?  Can you identify a recent decision you made primarily because it felt right, without considering what God's Word teaches?  What teaching from the Bible have you found difficult to accept or put into practice?

Life Application: Read, reflect, respond

Set aside 15 minutes today. Read Psalm 119:105 and 2 Timothy 3:16–17 slowly.

Then write down:

What does this teach me about God?

What does this reveal about me?

What needs to change in my thinking or behavior?

What will I do differently today?

Do not rush to finish the reading just to say you completed it. Give the Word time to speak to the choices you are making.

Today's Prayer

Lord, forgive me for the times I have allowed my own reasoning, my feelings, or the opinions of others to guide me without seeking Your wisdom. Give me a hunger for Your Word. Help me receive correction without becoming defensive and apply what I learn with humility. Let Your truth guide my decisions and strengthen my hope. In Jesus' name, amen.

Journal Prompt: What is God showing me through His Word that I need to put into practice?

Carry This With You: The Word of God is not only for my encouragement; it is also for my correction.
