The Blessing I Want Versus the Surrender God Requires
Scripture: Luke 18:18–23
Today's Lesson: Sometimes the greatest obstacle to following Jesus is the thing we are unwilling to release.
The rich ruler approached Jesus with an important question: What must I do to inherit eternal life? He had a history of keeping the commandments. From his perspective, he had been doing what was right.
Yet Jesus revealed something that the ruler had not confronted within himself. He was unwilling to surrender his possessions and follow Jesus in the way Jesus required of him.
His problem was not that he lacked religious knowledge. His problem was that his devotion had a limit.
The ruler wanted the assurance of eternal life, but Jesus exposed the attachment that stood between the man and wholehearted discipleship. His sorrow revealed how deeply he valued what he was being asked to release.
We can be careful about the rules and still struggle with surrender. We can be faithful in some areas while protecting another area from God's authority.
Our attachment may not be money. It may be pride, resentment, control, fear, a relationship, our reputation, or the need to have everything happen according to our plans.
The uncomfortable question is this: What if the very thing I keep asking God to bless is not the thing He is asking me to surrender?
This does not mean every unanswered prayer is evidence of disobedience. It means that waiting seasons can become opportunities for honest examination.
Reflect on your life
What possession, relationship, attitude, or personal ambition has too much control over my decisions?
If following Jesus required me to change something I deeply value, how would I respond?
Am I asking God to give me more while resisting what He is asking me to do with what I already have?
Life application for today
Identify one area where you have been resisting a clear biblical responsibility or a necessary change. Take one concrete step toward obedience.
That may mean apologizing, making a difficult but honest decision, becoming more generous, releasing resentment, or relinquishing control over an outcome.
Do not make a dramatic promise you cannot sustain. Start with one sincere act of obedience.
Prayer
Father, reveal the things I have placed above Your will. Give me the courage to surrender what competes with my devotion to You. Help me understand that following You is more important than possessing everything I desire. Teach me to trust You even when obedience costs me something. In Jesus' name, amen.
Journal Time: What is the one thing I would find hardest to release if Jesus asked me to place it in His hands?
